At Brakeman's we work hard to allow others the opportunity to slow down. We slow down and rest on Sundays so we can come prepared to pour ourselves into service of others the following week. We take very seriously the selection of those we invite onto our staff. We focus on character because it's important internally and is also the key to serving the Matthews community well. We know that our customers trust us as a place to come to both work and take a break.

• We hire heart. We can train tasks.

Early on, as we started Brakeman's, we stumbled onto an actual brakeman's handbook from the 1950's produced by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway company and given as a training manual to their newly hired brakemen. It's both funny and inspiring to see how similar our work is to the old-time brakemen on the railway. It says things like "safety is important", "the railway must run on time", "you have to show up for work", "you'll work in all sorts of weather" and our favorite, "hard work and common sense go a long way on the railway".

Those old-time brakemen had a quiet and humble job at the back of the train, slowing that giant train for a safe arrival. Their work was heroic! Few metaphors fit better for what we do in the busy lives of our guests.
